Strategy Before Tactics: Why Posting More Won’t Fix Your Marketing
“I just need to post more.” It’s one of the most common things we hear from business owners. More reels, more ads, more emails, more of everything. And it’s completely understandable. When sales are slow, doing something feels better than doing nothing.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: if the foundations aren’t right, more marketing simply means more of the same results, just faster and more expensively.
Tactics are the things you do. Strategy is the thinking that decides which things are worth doing at all. Without it, even brilliant tactics end up pulling in different directions.
The signs you’re running on tactics alone
- You’re active on several platforms but can’t say which one actually brings in customers.
- You change direction every time you see a new trend or course.
- Your website, social media and emails each seem to describe a slightly different business.
- You get likes and followers, but very few enquiries.
- You’re busy all the time, yet it’s hard to point to what’s working.
If a few of these sound familiar, you don’t have a posting problem. You have a strategy gap.
What strategy actually answers
A good marketing strategy doesn’t need to be a 60-page document. At its heart, it answers a handful of simple but powerful questions.
1. Who exactly are we for?
“Everyone” is not a target market. The more clearly you can describe the person you help, including their situation, their frustrations and what they want most, the easier every other marketing decision becomes.
2. What problem do we solve, and why does it matter to them?
People don’t buy services. They buy a change in their situation. Your marketing needs to describe that change in their words, not in industry jargon.
3. Why us and not someone else?
What makes your approach different? It might be your method, your experience, your values or the way you work with people. If you can’t say it simply, your customers won’t be able to either.
4. What is the path from stranger to customer?
How does someone discover you, get to know you, trust you and finally buy from you? Mapping this journey shows you exactly what content, offers and follow-up you need at each stage, and which ones you can stop wasting time on.
5. How will we know it’s working?
Pick a small number of numbers that genuinely matter, such as enquiries, conversion rate and revenue, rather than chasing likes. Then check them regularly and adjust.
Why strategy makes tactics easier, not harder
Here’s the part people don’t expect: once the strategy is clear, the day-to-day marketing gets simpler. You know who you’re talking to, so writing content is faster. You know which channels matter, so you can ignore the rest without guilt. You know what each piece of content is meant to do, so it’s easier to measure and improve.
Instead of doing everything and hoping something sticks, you do fewer things, on purpose, and do them well.
Start with one honest question
If you could only keep one marketing activity for the next 90 days, which would it be, and why? If the answer isn’t obvious, that’s a sign it’s time to step back and get clear before doing more.
