11 Ad Principles That Still Get Results
Platforms change. Algorithms change. The way people scroll, click and buy keeps evolving. But the principles behind a great ad have stayed remarkably steady, because they’re built on how people think, not on how technology works.
Whether you’re writing a Facebook ad, a landing page or an email subject line, these eleven principles still make the difference between being ignored and getting results.
1. Stop the scroll with a powerful headline
Your headline has one job: to earn the next second of attention. Lead with the outcome your reader wants or the problem they’re feeling right now. If the headline doesn’t land, nothing else gets read.
2. Speak to one person
Write as if you’re talking to a single, specific reader. Use “you” far more than “we”. The more personal it feels, the more it connects.
3. Get to the point, quickly
Attention is short and competition is fierce. Say the most important thing first, then support it. If a sentence doesn’t earn its place, cut it.
4. Sell the outcome, not the feature
Features describe what something is. Benefits describe what it does for the reader. Better still, describe the feeling of life after the problem is solved. That’s the sizzle people buy.
5. Be specific, not vague
“Grow your business” means very little. “Fill your calendar with qualified enquiries” paints a picture. Specific language is more believable and more memorable, as long as every claim you make is true.
6. Avoid empty buzzwords
Words like “solution”, “innovative” and “world-class” have been used so often they’ve stopped meaning anything. Describe what you actually do in plain words your customer would use themselves.
7. Give enough substance to act
Short isn’t always better. Give readers enough information to feel confident taking the next step, and no more than they need. The right length depends on how big the ask is.
8. Make it easy to read
Short paragraphs, clear headings, plenty of white space and text that’s comfortable to read on a phone. If it looks like hard work, people won’t start.
9. Match the ad to the landing page
When someone clicks, the page they land on should continue the exact promise of the ad. A mismatch creates doubt instantly and sends people straight back to their feed.
10. Stand for something different
Know your unique selling proposition and make it obvious. If your ad could belong to any of your competitors, it isn’t doing its job.
11. Tell them exactly what to do next
Every ad needs a clear, specific call to action. Not “learn more” by default, but the real next step: book a call, take the quiz, claim the guide. Make it simple and make it now.
Timeless principles, modern execution
These principles work because they respect how people make decisions: quickly, emotionally and with very little patience for confusion. Pair them with good tracking and regular testing, and every ad you run becomes a little smarter than the last.
